End-of-planting update: a new forest in Baclain

Belgium
4/14/2025

A total of 7,650 trees were planted over a surface area of 2.5 hectares between March and early April 2025. The species and proportions planted matched the initial plans precisely: 2,601 Douglas firs (34%), 2,525 larches (33%), 1,530 beeches (20%), 765 oaks (10%), and 229 chestnut trees (3%).

The trees were of good quality and the sizes were appropriate. The site was characterized by a significant presence of ferns but posed no particular access issues or presence of sensitive habitats. The planting was carried out with a mixed layout of Douglas and larch trees spaced at 2 by 1.7 meters, and beech and oak trees were planted along the borders with a spacing of 2 by 1.5 meters. The work involved preparing the land, planting, and applying a natural forest latex for protection. There were no specific difficulties during the planting.

Future maintenance will include vegetation clearing due to the heavy fern cover. Pictures will be added soon!
