The project is located in Loch Craignish, Argyll on the west coast of Scotland. As is typical of many sea lochs on Scotland's west coast, Loch Craignish is a fjord-style loch. It is relatively shallow throughout with a maximum depth of 20m. It has approximately 80km of coastline, a busy yachting marina, a sea trout farm, and a community of approximately 500 people. There are four large islands, two of which form an almost continuous barrier enclosing an area of shallow, sheltered water called the 'lagoon'. Recreational boat moorings are situated outside the marina and in the lagoon area. Currently, Loch Craignish has a 5.25 ha meadow of Z. marina and a 0.25ha meadow of Z. nolti. Seagrass beds make up 0.4% of the area of the loch and host 68% of the biodiversity.
