Mangrove restoration, effectively driven by fishing communities

All mangrove restoration projects carried out in 2025 are grounded in a strong and clearly stated reality: 100% of the communities our local partner, Bôndy, works with on mangroves are fishing communities. This direct link between mangroves and artisanal fishing shapes the project approach from the very beginning.

For these communities, mangroves are not an abstract ecosystem. They determine access to marine resources, food security, and daily income. By restoring mangroves, fish, crab, and shrimp breeding areas are preserved, fish stocks are able to regenerate, and fishing activities become more sustainable in the face of climatic and environmental pressures.

This approach ensures that every planting action is embedded in a logic of real use, fully understood, embraced, and defended by the communities themselves.

Additionally, the participation of community women in this project is central. For many women, working on mangrove sites means contributing to household food security, securing their children’s future, and actively participating in the preservation of fishing areas that are essential to local livelihoods. This strong female participation strengthens projects over the long term even more.
