We are pleased to share that the tree planting project in Steenhuffel has been successfully completed. In the past weeks, a total of 9,525 native trees and shrubs were planted on a 3.8-hectare plot located in Londerzeel.
Due to a delayed start caused by persistently wet conditions in January, February, and March, the trees were kept dormant in cold storage to ensure they remained in excellent condition until the weather and soil allowed for planting. The quality of the planting stock was high, and all requested species and sizes were available.
The species mix included a diverse range of native trees such as Alnus glutinosa, Prunus padus, Betula pendula, Quercus robur, and Tilia cordata, alongside a rich variety of indigenous shrubs — most of which were planted around the forest edges to boost biodiversity and ecological resilience. Rows were drilled for planting, ensuring an organized structure for the young forest to thrive. The work, including soil preparation and planting, was carried out professionally by Bomenplanter.
Although planting was slightly delayed due to the wet soil, the outcome matches the original project goals. Conditions during the planting days were dry, but the soil retained significant moisture — ideal for giving the new trees a strong start. A timely rain shower on the Sunday following planting gave the plantation a head start!
This successful planting effort sets the foundation for a biodiverse and climate-resilient forest in the years to come.
