Our partner organization in Tanzania has launched its third tree nursery operation on the ground.
With a production target of 2.5 million seedlings by 2027, these seedlings will be integrated into community-based agroforestry systems and reforestation projects.
The nursery is currently in its most labour-intensive phase. A team of 46 workers (30 women and 16 men) are carrying out the full seedling production cycle: seed selection and preparation, soil substrate preparation, container filling, and germination monitoring. This intensive phase runs through November, after which the facility will transition to continuous operation managed by 3 permanent staff members.
Community-based nursery models like this one are a proven approach to combining ecological restoration with inclusive rural employment, with women representing 65% of the current workforce.
