Where seagrass restoration starts: at a donor meadow

The Netherlands
10/5/2026

Talking about seagrass restoration is one thing. Standing in the meadow where it starts is something else. On 28 September, together with our partner Sea Ranger Service, we visited a donor meadow of dwarf eelgrass (Zostera noltei) near Oostdijk in the Eastern Scheldt.

This is where the work begins. The Sea Rangers harvest cores and seeds from this healthy meadow and plant them out at other spots in the Eastern Scheldt, so one thriving meadow helps new ones grow. Harvesting sustainably is essential. The Sea Rangers only take what the meadow can safely spare and stay well within safe limits, so the donor meadow's health is never put at risk. Restoring new meadows should never come at the cost of an existing one.

What's next? Planting only happens in spring, so the first Go Ocean seagrass will go into the water next spring. From that season on, we'll share regular updates from the field here on the impact platform. Stay tuned.

Thanks to the Sea Rangers for having us!
