In early 2023, 4,000 trees were planted together with local farmers in the district of Ambanja, in the northwest of Madagascar. This fertile region is under heavy pressure from deforestation, driven by slash and burn agriculture, firewood use and charcoal production.
The project tackles this by working with farmers to establish cocoa plantations using an agroforestry model, where cocoa trees grow alongside other high-value tree species. This allows degraded land to regenerate while giving farmers more diverse and stable sources of income.
Today, the trees are showing beautiful growth, and we’ll let the photos speak for themselves! A promising step for both the land and the farmers who care for it.
