Three years of growth for the holm oaks in Caleruega (Spain)

Three years ago, 1,700 holm oaks were planted on a former agricultural field in Caleruega, in the Spanish province of Burgos. Each tree was mycorrhized with black truffle beforehand. Thanks to this partnership with the fungus, the trees develop a stronger root system and become more resistant to heat and drought.

During the latest monitoring visit, the young trees were looking good. 85% of the trees are thriving, with no damage from game or pests. The strongest oaks are already growing out of their protectors, while the others are steadily catching up.

The truffles themselves will take a little more patience. There are no visible signs of them around the trees yet, which is completely normal at this young age. In the meantime, the trees that didn’t make it will be replanted, and the soil around the young oaks will be kept clear to give them room to grow.

A forest that restores the land and might one day produce truffles. We can’t wait to see what the coming years bring!
