New species added to the list: Spotted Gully Shark 🦈

We’ve added a new shark to our list: the Spotted Gully Shark (Triakis megalopterus). This small-to-medium coastal species can grow up to 1.8 m and is known for its distinctive dark spots and gentle temperament. Spotted Gully Sharks are endemic to southern Africa and prefer rocky reefs, kelp forests, and sandy gullies (hence the name). They play an important ecological role as mid-level predators, helping to maintain the balance of inshore ecosystems.

We caught our very first individual in November: a young shark measuring 0.68 m. Because this species is considered vulnerable in parts of its range due to overfishing and habitat pressure, adding it to our dataset brings valuable insight into local biodiversity and coastal health. It’s an exciting addition to our records and will officially join our list of targeted species for 2026, giving us the chance to contribute meaningful population and movement data for future conservation efforts.
